Useful Supplements To Help Diabetics Control Blood Sugar and Improve Liver Health

A study from the University of Medical Sciences in Tehran, Iran, confirms earlier reports that supplementation with curcumin, a dried powder from turmeric root, and piperine is helpful in controlling blood sugar levels in people who have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. In February of 2018, the journal Drug Research (Stuttgart) reported improvements in blood sugar and liver health after the participants were treated with both supplements.

  • supplemented care with 500 mg/day of curcuminoids (like curcumin) and 5 mg/day of piperine.

There were 50 participants in each group. After three months...

  • the supplemented group showed an average of 9 mg/dL (0.5 mmol/L) lowering of fasting blood sugar vs. 3 mg/dL (0.167 mmol/L) average blood sugar decrease in the placebo participants.

Supplemented participants also showed lower liver enzymes, a sign of good liver health. The amount of inflammation was the same in both groups.

The researchers concluded blood sugar levels and liver function were improved as a benefit of curcuminoids and piperine, although there was not any change in inflammation observed.

On the other hand, researchers at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences in Iran found curcumin decreased inflammation in 50 participants who had been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Their work was reported on in January of 2018 in the journal Current Clinical Pharmacology...

  • 50 of the participants were given curcumin 1000 mg and piperine 10 mg per day and compared with
  • 50 remaining participants who were each given a placebo.

Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) was reduced, and adiponectin was raised in the supplemented group.

  • TNF-alpha is a molecule known as a cachexin and is involved in inflammation.
  • Adiponectin is a molecule, along with other functions, involved in anti-inflammatory activity.

Since Type 2 is an inflammatory disease, it is best to keep inflammation to a minimum.

Another use for curcuminoids in Type 2 diabetes might be in prevention of heart disease. In August of 2017, the journal Complementary Therapeutic Medicine reported on a study from Baqiyatallah University of Medical Sciences in Tehran, Iran. After 12 weeks Type 2 diabetic participants who were given curcuminoids developed higher levels of HDL or "good" cholesterol than the participants who received a placebo. From these results, scientists concluded curcumin supplementation could be one way of preventing heart and blood vessel disease in people diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.

Although managing your disease can be very challenging, Type 2 diabetes is not a condition you must just live with. You can make simple changes to your daily routine and lower both your weight and your blood sugar levels. Hang in there, the longer you do it, the easier it gets.
