Can the diabetes diet plan reverse diabetes?

In recent years, a lot of focus on diabetic research has been on transplanting the insulin producing cells of the pancreas and on developing drugs that help the body produce more insulin.

The key to reversing diabetes with the diabetes diet plan is to first understand how the body is affected by diabetes

Insulin is the hormone produced in the pancreas, that is used to get the glucose from the bloodstream into the body's cells. It also works in other ways to lower the amount of sugar in the blood. It helps liver and muscle cells change glucose into starch, and helps fat cells store energy as fatty acids.

When insulin does not work properly, extra sugar builds up in the blood and diabetes symptoms develop.

Types of diabetes

There are two main types of diabetes mellitus which is the medical name (Mellitus is latin for "honey-sweet).

  • type 1: Often called juvenile diabetes, because it was often noticed in a younger age group. The body's own immune system may destroy the beta cells of the pancreas that produce insulin in an autoimmune reaction.
  • type 2: the most common form, that accounts for 90 to 95 percent of all diabetes cases, and affects mostly adults over years old. However type2 diabetes is now being seen in more young people and even children. In the early stages of type 2 diabetes, the body cannot use the insulin that the pancreas produces. The condition is known as insulin resistance or prediabetes and indicates and increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes can takes years to develop as the pancreas wears out from producing insulin to help convert the sugar in the bloodstream.

Symptoms

Some of the symptoms of diabetes that should be observed.

  • extreme thirst
  • frequent urination
  • low energy levels, feeliing weak and tired
  • unexplained weight loss
  • blurred vision
  • slow healing sores
  • pain, tingling or numbness in extremities

In diabetics, the kidneys work extra hard in removing waste products from the blood, along with the sugar and water and water soluble vitamins and minerals that the body needs for proper functioning.

Ketoacidosis

When fat is transformed to be used as energy, ketones are produced.

If the body has to burn off a lot of fat, because there is not enough insulin to use the sugar, a condition called ketoacidosis develops.Ketones can be distinguished by a somewhat fruity smell that can be noticed in people with uncontrolled diabetes.

With Ketoacidosis, symptoms such as headaches, tiredness, confusion, stomach pain or breathing problems may occur as the patient may lose consciousness and go into a diabetic coma. The condition may even be fatal if not treated immediately.

Complications

Uncontrolled diabetes can lead to other health problems:

Blood vessel damage:A heart attack or stroke can result from damaged blood vessels that harden and become narrow.

Infections:High blood sugar, weakens the immune system. allowing germs and infectious bacteria to multiply.

Eye damage: Diabetes is the number one cause of blindness among middle-aged people as the high sugar levels in the blood damages the blood vessel that nourish the eyes.

Kidney damage and nerve damage: due to damaged blood vessels

Foot problems Poor circulation is a problem in diabetics as blood vessels in the foot become narrow and hard. withouth the proper nutrients. infections take a longer time to heal.Together with nerve damage an improper healing, infections can develop resulting in the need for amputation.
