High blood sugar levels (BSLs) can cause a whole host of health issues. Even if a person hasn't been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, there's a good chance it is coming soon. Many people are really surprised when they visit their doctor for a routine checkup due to a specific complaint, for example fatigue, and their blood tests come back showing their blood sugar is far too high.

By getting your BSLs under control early, you can avoid being at risk for many of the complications people with Type 2 diabetes are prone to develop.

As BSLs rise and Type 2 diabetes develops, it really lets you know in many ways what is happening to your body.

Here are a few clues:

Wounds that are slow to heal: Many people with high BSLs find they have poor wound healing. This can lead to a lot of other problems including bacterial and fungal infections. Diabetics have a hard time overcoming these kinds of infections, and they can be life-threatening. This is why it's so important to make sure to take care of any wounds as soon as you are aware of them.

Wounds and skin infections are slow to heal in Type 2 diabetics. Skin infections that cannot be healed could lead to gangrene and even amputation of a foot or limb.

Lethargy and fatigue: People with high blood sugar often experience weakness, tiredness, lethargy and fatigue. They don't realize their ongoing exhaustion is related to high blood sugar issues. They also have blood sugar ups and downs which can cause other associated symptoms such as shakiness and a rapid heart rate.

Frequent urination: Drinking more fluids due to a constant thirst causes us to urinate more frequently than usual. Another reason for frequent urination is because the body is trying to dispose of the extra blood sugar by filtering it out through the kidneys. This can also lead to other problems such as:

  • incontinence,
  • interrupted sleep,
  • mineral deficiencies, and
  • dehydration.

The dehydration aspect then leads to excessive thirst.

Excessive thirst: You have a need to drink huge amounts of fluid as you body tries to overcome the lack of water. As the amount of water in your blood declines, you feel thirsty.

Blurred vision: Many people with high blood sugar find themselves at the eye doctor frequently. They are constantly changing their prescription because it seems like their blurred vision is occurring more often. However, this is due to the extra blood sugar in their body... fluid is pulled from their tissues, including fluid from the lenses of their eyes. This will affect their ability to focus. Once their BSLs are brought under control, the lenses go back to their normal state and their vision returns to normal.

Stickiness in the blood: Having high blood sugar increases the stickiness of certain factors in the blood platelets which then increases your risk of stroke and heart attack.

As you can see, maintaining normal blood sugar levels is critical for good health. Otherwise, you could be facing a whole host of medical problems leading down a slippery slope to ill-health. Eating regularly and following a healthy eating plan will keep your blood sugar stable and normal. Many people with Type 2 diabetes, or prediabetes, want to munch all day. Exercise also helps to reduce blood sugar levels, but prior to starting a new exercise program, check with your doctor especially if you are over the age of 35.
